Beach and recovery prep

4WD Tyre Gear, Recovery Tracks and Beach Driving Checklist

Beach driving and soft tracks are much easier when your tyre gear and recovery tracks are ready before you leave. The aim is not to carry every accessory available. It is to have the right gear in the right place, know your tyre pressures and keep recovery equipment clean enough to use when conditions change.

Recovery tracks are most useful when they are packed where you can reach them quickly.

Build the tyre kit first

Tyre pressure is one of the most important parts of 4WD touring. A pressure gauge, deflator and compressor can be more useful than many larger accessories because they help the vehicle work with the surface. Soft sand, corrugated tracks, loaded highway travel and towing all need different thinking.

Before any trip, check the condition of your tyres, spare wheel, valve caps and inflation gear. Also make sure the compressor hose reaches every tyre when the vehicle is loaded.

Pack where it is useful

  • Recovery tracks mounted or packed near the rear.
  • Compressor and tyre tools easy to reach.
  • Gloves and shovel stored with recovery gear.
  • Cleaning brush or bag for muddy equipment.

Check before driving sand

  • Local rules and beach access conditions.
  • Tyre pressure plan for entry and exit.
  • Tide timing where relevant.
  • Recovery points and basic communication.

Recovery tracks need care too

Recovery tracks take a beating in sand, mud and rocky soil. After a trip, rinse off salt and mud, check for damaged teeth, let them dry properly and secure them before the next drive. If tracks live outside the vehicle, make sure the mounting setup is still tight after corrugations.

For a bigger setup, combine tyre gear with the 4WD touring gear checklist and the touring upgrades guide.

Practical tip: recovery gear is only helpful if you can get to it. Do not bury tracks, shackles, gloves or the compressor under camping gear that has to be unpacked first.
